In the last days we have introduced you to our very personal games of the year 2018. At the end the whole editorial team has voted and each of us has nominated his favorites. Before we pop the champagne corks in the evening and light the fireworks, we present you: The Gamers.at Top Games of the year 2018.
Before we start with our top 5 games of 2018, one thing right away: It was quite exciting. Although the leader duo were able to distinguish themselves quite quickly from the rest, in the end only a few points decided between the first two places. But also the other places were fiercely contested.
Although the big surprises in the final list didn’t happen, we were still able to identify some interesting findings. It was to be expected that no sports or racing game would be found under the titles mentioned, because such genre lovers are rather sparse in our editorial staff. But also in the area of VR no game could really convince us this year, because altogether only two PSVR games got a mention at all with Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Déraciné and even these two landed very far behind on our list. Nintendo looks similar this year. Although we have a lot of switch players in our ranks, Octopath Traveller is just one exclusive title that has made it a bit further forward, the rest, like Super Mario Party, can be found under “further away”.
Before it starts with Top 5 games of the year 2018, here are some more titles on the other places: 6th Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, 7th Valkyria Chronicles IV, 8th Octopath Traveller, 9th Dragon Quest XI, 10th Pillars of Eternity 2
Place 5: Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
With Origins Ubisoft has brought the Assassin’s Creed game series back on track, so no wonder that its successor Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey was one of the most expected games this year. The fight of the Spartans against the Athenians was really very exciting, in addition to a complex story, humor, surprise elements, beautiful music background as well as good graphics and multi-layered characters. Even though Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey was only able to reach a place in the top five by a narrow margin and almost on the last push of a button, the game definitely deserves it.

Place 4: Dead Cells
A small in-game mixes up the blockbuster titles. Already when Dead Cells started into the Early Access phase last year, it had our full attention and after this year’s official release we feel more than confirmed with our foreboding. The Rouge-like and Metroidvania game by developer Motion Twin not only impresses with a beautiful pixel look and a stunning score, but above all with its ingenious combat system and the enormous replay value. Definitely one of the best platformers of the year.

Place 3: Detroid: Become Human
At Detroid: Become Human, our editorial team is divided. Most of them couldn’t start much with the interactive thriller, located in a not far away future, in which the production of androids has become a mass market, and didn’t play it either. But everyone who did it was thrilled and gave the game top ratings. Especially the deep and emotional story was one of the reasons why Detroid: Become Human finally climbed to the top of our list.

Place 2: Red Dead Redemption 2
As in almost every list of the best games 2018, it was pretty clear from the beginning that Red Dead Redemption 2 would not be missing for us either – the question was always which place it would end up in. For a place at the top it wasn’t enough – only a few points were decisive. Maybe the result would have looked different if we had also considered all the “Do I really want to play yet” lists of our editors. But no matter which place the Westernepos occupies with us, with Red Dead Redemption 2 Rockstar Games has created an impressive masterpiece.

The Gamers.at Game of the Year 2018: God of War
New setting, revised combat system, changed gameplay, but old name – no stone remained on the other with God of War. Nevertheless, or maybe because of it, Kratos, the god of war, was finally able to hold his own against the strong competition without any problems. The expectations were high – yet they were surpassed and not only because of the revolutionary “single-shot” cinematography or the emotional, multi-layered story around the relationship between Kratos and his son Atreus. Although we were a bit sceptical about the complete realignment of the series, at the end we agree that God of War is our game of the year 2018.
