Taiwaner Miner illegally consumes electricity for over €2 million

It is now well known that malware mining poses a risk for PC users and increasingly also for companies with larger server systems. The latest news from Taiwan shows that there is no need for a criminal network to earn money with “hidden” mining at the expense of others.

Mining concentration on Ethereum and Bitcoin

On this scale one rarely reads – at least in the case of a single perpetrator – about an abuse of foreign computers for crypto mining. The news from Taiwan now shows quite impressively what criminal potential the mining of Bitcoin and other currencies can have in reality. Media in Taiwan reported around the holidays about a theft of electricity, which has it in itself. The arrested man literally did not let himself be lumped together to enrich himself with the two currencies Ethereum and Bitcoin.

Around 2.6 million damages among those affected

The value of the illegally used energy for his mining activities amounts to the equivalent of more than 2.6 million euros. The fact that individual miners use the systems of others to such an extent without being noticed has so far been a rarity. The result: the suspect was arrested and now has to answer in court. If “Mister Yang” had not been caught, his actions would have been worthwhile.

Business premises served the perpetrator as a serious backdrop

The competent authority in Taiwan states a sum of at least 12 million euros which the perpetrator is said to have dug. The man is said to have rented numerous premises as a cover. From his founded Internet cafés and other companies he then worked in the background on mining with the help of ignorant computer and server users.
