MOVIE review: The Lighthouse (OV)

Oh, how I enjoyed this Film. I must admit that I only by one of my colleagues on The Lighthouse became aware of am. To be exact, according to the Film Festival in Cannes this year. It only took a little Research to the spark to the flame was. After his role as a Director in The Witch, there was a long silence by Robert Eggers. Only this year he returns with his second, word-literal “strip” back to the canvas, sets a significant milestone in the current film industry, and it illustrates at the same time, that sometimes, a step, a step can be Forward.

The Lighthouse is about the lives of two men on a remote island towards the end of the 19th century. Century. The Task? To keep a Lighthouse Outpost off the coast of new England to maintain. Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) and Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) are Initially not warm to each other, as the much older Thomas forces the young Ephraim to do the dirty work, and he can be contrary to the provisions of the former lumberjack no shift in the dome of the lighthouse to take. The existing relations of power are uncomfortable with Ephraim at the beginning of the four weeks of the job, which is why he tries more and more and more of his colleagues find out. Also, the sudden Disappearance of his predecessor, helps in the whole Situation just a little. As a storm, the two completely different personalities on the island, developed the balance of power game more and more to a harsh struggle for Survival. The mental strain makes it to keep Efraim impossible to track and to distinguish between reality and fantasy. In doing so, he not only represents his environment in Question, but also themselves.

CRITICISM

The plot of The Lighthouse deals with some of the human subjects to be particularly at that time, under such circumstances really existed. A recurrent symbolism is, for example, the Sirene, which is embodied by the Model Valeriia Karaman. Even Homer wrote in his epic “Odyssey” through the beautiful singing of the sirens, and the fact that this lure enchanted Sailors to get into the water to drown you. Also in The Lighthouse is the purpose of this allusion to the symbolization of the narrow line between reason and madness of the characters. While the effects of loneliness on the shy Ephraim are clearly noticeable, it is estimated that much harder to what is in the head of his self-proclaimed superiors, Thomas plays. The narrative perspective from the point of view of the canadian young makes it hard to keep track of as a viewer, even the Overview, and therefore, it is also possible, much in the, however very confusing, the end of rushing in to interpret.

The ambiguity at the end, contributes immensely to the atmosphere of the film, the one or the other spectators but halfway. The end-to-end symbolism, which is Represented in the Film, throws to the end of the 110 minutes of more questions than it answers. Of course, it’s up to each viewer to interpret the ending for themselves, but an Interpretation on a Basis of unexplained questions and some incomplete explanations is not too easy. According to an Interview of the Director, the two main characters of the film are reminiscent of the mythological gods, Prometheus and Proteus, which results in a thorough Research, a lot of sense.

The Film is not afraid to confront the audience with obscene, part, exaggerated, realistic scenes, with the result that even the audience to the limit of his perception. Especially the Set and work with almost entirely practical effects in connection with the unique look, feel, as you would see real scenes of an old video recording.

As many surely have noticed, is different The Lighouse in appearance greatly from any of the other films in today’s time. Reason for this is the particularly eye-catching Format, in combination with the Black-and-White color scheme. As a camera man acted Jarin Blaschke, which is also in The Witch already an amazing work. According to him, people oriented themselves to the talkies of the 19th century. Century. The almost square shape of the 35mm film recordings, contributes immensely to the Mystery/Horror Feeling of the movie. The consistently oppressive atmosphere woven through the Narrow Format even further, up to a point where a claustrophobic Chub discomfort to normal will be. This authenticity is due to depressing music by Mark Korvan accompanied, which is also already on The Witch worked has. Also, the circumstances of the Location have been captured in the movie as it was shown, it is neither Wind nor rain machines were used. This is all well and good, but especially in the case of a Film with just two characters, it is important that there is a lack of acting performance. And to Counteract, but to not also lose the credibility of the Settings, had to Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, an intensive language-graduate training, in order to give the Spoken the at that time usual fishermen’s dialect. At this point, I make a quick digression: I’ve seen the Film in its original version. And admittedly, it was worth it! Although it was in some of the sections hard the clamor of a Drunken Willem Dafoes with an old English sailor’s dialect to follow, however, I would Argue that in the German synchronization, some of it is lost to the atmosphere.

CONCLUSION

For me, sets The Lighthouse sets new standards in today’s film industry. Robert Eggers and his Team made a Film on the legs, which is in its nature so unique that to describe it is difficult for me what was going on to me during the screening of the film by the head. The apparent authenticity of the footage takes the viewer into a world in which reality is barely distinguishable from the imagination of the Director. The unique optics unfolds its strength by the acting quality of Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe bring. The part unanswered questions like work for one or the other cinema-goers, although disturbing, however, raises the question of whether each puzzle needs an answer.
