Movie Review: Little Woman

Before just over 2 years, the 37-year-old Greta Gerwig, with her directorial debut , Lady Bird 5 Oscar nominations retract, and, therefore, for good sit up and take notice in something increase first Hollywood made sure of that. Now with their new production of the countless times (for the first time in 1918) filmed literary classic, the Little Woman back and prove that her first movie is not only a great stroke of luck was.

CONTENT

At the time of the American civil war, the four March sisters grow up in poor conditions, but under the loving care of their mother, Marmee, in a small village in Massachusetts. Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy could not be more different, but you get it all together again and again, because in common: they all have their great sense of family.

While her father serves in the war, the four girls grow into young women and begin to go their separate ways. Especially the stubborn Jo drives it in the wide world, and so she goes to New York to become a writer. When they reached, however, a telegram from your home, leaves everything and returns home.

CRITICISM

The story of the Little Woman tells is far away from the unknown and also changes in Gerwigs new version is as good as nothing. It adds a few tiny elements, which have however no impact on the core statements of the substance. As in the original it is accompanied by the four sisters on their way to adulthood, with all the UPS and Downs, the result of this development. For each of them in their own way, because sisters or not, in character you differ very much from each other.

It is precisely here that the greatest strength of the story, and thus also a (successful) adaptation is. Whether it’s the traditional Meg, the wish for a family, the tomboyish Jo, who loves to Write, the quiet and musically gifted Beth, or something selfish youngest child, Amy, they are all multi-layered and vivid characters. Each of them has their own dreams and Fears, goals and weaknesses, but it connects the family has for each one of them is a top priority. This makes them incredibly believable and just so terribly adorable.

The Rest of the characters, although not as in detail as the sisters exude sympathy. Yes even the of the girl as a “nasty old maid,” shown, a rich aunt, is actually just a little bit quirky and in her own way, but very in the welfare of the Four interested. And here lies my only criticism of the Little Woman as a story: How believable all the characters, taken by itself, may be, in sum, acts is a not necessarily small squad of only wonderfully understanding, with huge hearts-equipped characters, but a little too much like a fairy tale.

Whether this fact bothers you or not, it is certainly not the fault of the film. Quite the contrary, appear to be at least the 4 protagonists, still to little bit more complex than in the past. The mood and statement is true to the implementation of the substance succeed Gerwig is nevertheless excellent. With a further simple retelling it is not, however, because even if the Plot of 1:1 remains the same, fiddling around, the young Director a bit of the narrative structure. Their version always makes time jumps and back, what is the whole thing a completely new, but probably not by anyone’s mistress, gives dynamism.

Of course, such colourful characters are not worth much if you are not represented by capable Thespians. And also here is the new version knows how to convince the Bank. Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh and Eliza Scanlen Shine as the four sisters, as well as Laura Dern Chalamet as Marmee and Timothée as the Love-Interest Laurie. And even if it should surprise no one, Meryl Streep in the role of aunt March as a Feast.

As Gerwigs first Film, also testifies to the Little Woman for a great understanding of Film as a medium. She has a knack for beautiful and meaningful pictures and also not in a chronological order starting at the end of the Plot (the Editing) works smoothly. Set and costume design are also managed wonderfully, the latter at least managed to score a Oscar nomination. Which by the way there is a total of 6 in number, another for the best Score from Alexandre Desplat, the Shine, in fact, wonderful and catchy melodies.

CONCLUSION

Little Woman is also in the latest version of a family drama, the positive, comforting variety. Even if the story deals quite specifically with the life, as a woman, and undisputed in the proscribed category of “women’s film” is one (I was one of exactly 2 men in the cinema), so the core of apply statements, but for all of us. The fact that all people seem to be almost too good to be true, might disturb the other viewers, but this is due to the template. The implementation of this is to have succeeded Greta Gerwig in any case, that’s excellent, because she acts in spite of the many previous film adaptations, very fresh, us craft is born fruit.
