Marvel’s Iron Man VR in the Test

Made his first appearance of The “Iron” in March 1963, but not until 45 years later became Tony Stark and his alter-Ego thanks to an excellent film implementation of the mass favorite. In Marvel’s Iron Man VR you take on the role of the genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist, and will, in addition, even for super heroes. If you want to know how you can fly with a suit and what kind of feeling it is, as the Avenger through the air to thunder, who now receives his answers.

Marvel’s Iron Man VR continues to act technically to the first Iron Man Film from 2008 on, but plays in its own universe, and has basically nothing to do with the MCU to do. This can also be felt very clearly in the staging, because the characters are based more on the Comic than in the movie template, which is also reflected in terms of synchronization and so we must to the voice of Robert Downey jr. refrain, what is first of all something unusual. The Story is completely told from the Ego perspective, and we assume, initially in the role of Tony Stark. This has completely pulled back out of the weapons business and his company on renewable energies specialized. His past as a weapons dealer catches up with Tony but soon, a mysterious figure by the name of Ghost is trying him and his assistant Pepper Potts, with a squadron of combat drones. Thanks to the Iron Man armor this attack can be blocked but, however, this is only the beginning of the ten hours of continuing adventure.

Overall, the story is well told and exciting, but very linear and somewhat predictable. At some Points in the plot, we can react by means of Multiple-Choice-dialogues on certain events, but the decisions taken do not affect the course of history. Nevertheless offers Marvel’s Iron Man VR, unlike many of his Board colleagues, a full-fledged game experience.

A large man in a suit of armor. Do you, then what are they?

Most of the time the game spends in the Iron Man suit, which is controlled exclusively by using the two Move controllers. With the rear Trigger, we activate the engines and the movement of the wrist, you can control the direction. If we turn off the Turbo, then we can move beyond that, the faster you can go. Sounds simple and intuitive? It is only to a limited extent. Although there is a Tutorial in the Form of a prologue, but in this about five minutes, you not only learned the basic mechanics of the movement, more. To make matters worse, the Fight with the Move controllers is carried out. We hold the hands to the front of the energy of fired bullets and Bend of the wrist, we switch to the secondary weapons systems, including missiles or grenades for it. In the melee, Tony can use his fists and, of course, the Unibeam, and a laser beam comes from the chest of the armor. As in the Comic template, this needs to be used wisely, because he needed time to Recharge. So far so good and both the fly and the Fight is considered to work alone relatively well, only in the heat of battle, the suit power is not always what I want. But even Tony Stark had in the first Iron Man movie so its difficult to start, and why should it happen to me as a player is different.

In the course of the game we visit different locations and fight against different kinds of robot drones. Is broken up the game by a variety of additional tasks, for example, the Deletion of a fire or the optional challenges, like time trials, or battle arenas. In spite of the variations in opponents with individual tactics, remains in Marvel’s Iron Man VR but the playful variety on the track. You may not improve, but after each Mission the Iron Man suit by means of acquired research points, or even whole parts of it replaced. So we get a faster rocket propulsion or Upgrades for the weapons systems. In addition, you can also switch pure optical suit designs free. This Upgrade System fits perfectly in the story, as well as in the game, and really motivates me to continue playing.

Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk

Marvel’s Iron Man VR is technically based on the Unity Engine. Of course, the game of the VR technology and the numerous possibilities for interaction lives, but the individual scenes and Scenes often seem to be very lacking detail and lifeless. Added to this, clearly noticeable drops in Framerate during the Fight, as well as strong flickering edges. Really bad, the frequent and sometimes very long loading screens are. The tugging on the thread of patience. I tested the game on a conventional PS4, whether or not the Pro Version delivers here a technically better Performance, may be doubted. The orchestral super-hero-Soundtrack is top notch, and even if not the Original speaker of the movies and series could be required, so the replacement makes a good figure, so that the acoustic aspect of Marvel’s Iron Man VR gives no cause for criticism. Who’s Sickness, by the way, fear of Motion, I can calm you down at this point: Despite the action-Packed gameplay, I was never actually evil, and with enough breaks easily sensitive players should have no problems.

CONCLUSION

My first game on the PSVR was the Batman Arkham VR and with Marvel’s Iron Man VR closes the circle, because, apart from Star Wars: Squadrons, it is probably one of the last great titles on this platform. While the dark knight was able to conceal the significant playful deficits with a spectacular staging, The Iron is very clear, how can VR also playful to good use. Marvel’s Iron Man VR has for me, but three major points of criticism. To be able to with the suit of cool maneuvers to fly, you need first of all a lot of Practice. Here, I would have liked a slightly more extensive Tutorial, which would have reduced the initial frustration of something is certainly something. The second Criticism relates to the lack of variety, during the fighting, and the third sections of the long and frequent load times between the game. But these points sure will fall in the category of “Whining on high level”, because the bottom line was Marvel’s Iron Man VR my quite high expectations of the game more than satisfying, and this is why, for me, one of the few games for each PSVR owner.
