Final Fantasy VIII Remastered in the Test

Around 20 years ago, since Final Fantasy VIII, originally on PS One, the light of the world was born – and while most of his colleagues in the meantime, long since in one Form or another on current consoles managed to have had, was the eighth series offshoot very quiet. With FFVIII Remastered change, and we may also use the Story about Squall, Rino, and co. in a souped-up Version on the Current Gen enjoy.

Of witches and SeeDs

First of all, first of all: Final Fantasy VIII Remastered makes the name all the honor, and in terms of content, almost a hundred percent on the Original from 1999: you start the game as Squall, who is in the military school, Balamb Garden, his last exams at the SeeD store of a mercenary special forces unit with magical skills. Said and done, and after the first few hours of play because you as a freshly baked SeeD and be sent on your first Mission, which takes you as a result of directly in the convoluted machinations around witches, your own past, and even time travel. Anyone who played the game, knows what I mean – and who, for the first Time in the FFVIIIworld goes, is to at this point not even more gespoilert be.

HD-Look(?)

The most striking Feature on Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is the updated Look of The character models were pixelated time of the PS One graphics performance in the detailed world of the Current Gen got to show us now, for the first Time, actually the best-looking guy at the SeeD graduation ball. Rest in Peace, Meme – we’re not going to regret at this point, really. The nice revised models are limited not only to your actual Party, but also side characters such as Dr. Kadowaki, the may you to the infirmary right at the beginning of the game, or the Director of Cid, the head of the Balamb Garden. All of them radiate with fresh Looks that could easily have come from modern Games and Details without end present.

Less loving the backgrounds have been revised, however: if one compares this with the Original Version or the (non-modded) PC-Port that realizes that here, too, was repaired in the first place, the static, prerendered environments are smoother now, especially in comparison to the new HD character models, everything looks a little fuzzy. Due to this could be the simple fact that the original Assets were no longer available – so at least persistent speculation. Whatever the reason, here the question arises whether it is not perhaps even better would have been, the models do not so much enhance the contrast between characters and backgrounds a little to disarm it.

Like the environments, it behaves the same with the FMVs and pre-rendered cut-scenes: here, Too, the original sequences were retained, and only smoothed, unlike the reasons for the lower Review on here but not in the negative, as everything seems to be at least homogeneous.

Modern Features

The graphics of the game was, partly more, partly less revised – but what else is new in Final Fantasy VIII Remastered? In addition to the visual Updates of the new Version were also added a few extra Features – or almost – Cheats-to have the experience to adapt a little to the Standard by 2019: By pressure on the Sticks or Shoulder Buttons, so a variety of new functions do not activate, the there was in the Original: three times the speed, which speeds up both your moves on the map or in the cities, but also all of the fights and scripted scenes, can a Buff function in combat, which gives you more health and increased the Limit-opportunities, as well as the possibility of all the random encounters, by means of a simple push of a button to de – or reactivate, if you just explore the surroundings or in the privacy of A to B run like.

While the acceleration function could reveal to me as the purest blessing (keywords: drawing spells and Triple Triad), and the Random Encounter-From, and was very practical (underwater research station …), felt the Buff function for me, personally, a little too much like cheating – but of course everything is a matter of taste. Sure is that these new features make the gameplay technically, but something in the older titles, even for new players, and the most poorly aged of the aspects expertly trapping: slow animations, and the need to draw some disturbing long/grind.

Small Steps Backwards

In addition to all the Updates, there are also two small, but nevertheless, values of backward steps mention in comparison to the original version, the stirring of the type of porting: First, the fact that the Remaster waives any Rumble feature would be there. Just when you Fight with Squalls Gunblade, the vibration Feedback is missing me a little bit – even though this stems more from my custom, as a real minus point for the game.

A little disturbing, the now axis-bound control, however, is: While you could lie down in the original PS One Version, thanks to the analog stick really flowing 360-degree turns, has to do this Version with a Four-axis control – or in other words: your characters can rotate in only eight predetermined directions and move. Thanks to turn-based combat system that has been selected for the skirmishes of no importance, while Exploring the landscapes and just when trying to get certain NPCs to address (for example, for a Triple Triad card game) or one of the hidden Magazine, this makes however, unfortunately, sometimes for shorter, “Oh-please-come-on-already”moments.

Well aged?

Finally, of course, still a question, especially those of interest is that Final Fantasy VIII is not already 20 years ago, have played, and it is, therefore, without the rose-colored glasses and see: How good is the game really aged? And the answer is: surprisingly well. The combat system, which is based on the fact, to defeat a special creature (referred to G. F.) and to then bind to the characters, and then, in turn, with the help of magic, in Slots, for HP, strength, defense and more place, was then, as now, complex and fun. The originally most annoying aspect of this, the partly tedious to Pull of Spells to pair with these, then, will be mitigated with the acceleration function well.

The main reason Final Fantasy VIII Remastered (yet again) to play, but its lovingly staged Story, seen through the eyes of one of the most likeable character Casts, the FFseries so far has seen – even if the main character Squall at the beginning, maybe not-so-socially acceptable acts.

CONCLUSION:

Long, long have we waited, FFVIII , even on current consoles, play to – has it been worth it? Depends on what you expect here: in Part, the age of the title makes, of course, noticeable – after all we have to do it with a Remaster and not a Remake, and anyone who buys the game in the hope of finding a completely new experience compared to the Original offer, will be disappointed. Who is one of the best Final Fantasy of the series, however, just in souped-up presentation and included a few new convenience Features (on Current Gen) gaming and finally get a experience of it here, however, is clearly the best Version of the game to do, and should, in any case, even if at some point (control, Rumble, backgrounds) a little improved would be can.
