Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition short test

Just over a year ago was released with Dragon Quest XI, the latest installment of the popular JRPG series for PC and PS4. This year, Square Enix to send a Switch-Version with all sorts of small and larger tools. We have thrown for you a look at it.

From Japan to us

Who is the Release of the original versions of Dragon Quest XI carefully observed, you may know that it is in Japan, not just the versions for PC and PS4, but also for 3DS. The Handheld Version was based on earlier series parts, presented in 2D and delivered not only Retro graphics of the Finest, but also other traditional elements such as random encounters.

The same 2D-Version is now incorporated in the Switch-Version and can be played as an alternative to the well-known 3D Version. You don’t need to to set the beginning of the game, but can during the Story at any time switch back and forth. Caution: A change of resets you to the last great Story-check point, you lose, so sometimes a Lot of progress in the game. To note: Some parts of the game are only in one of the two graphic versions available, such as the horse can race in 3D held.

Bombastic orchestra vs. graphic smears

Also the Japanese Version has been adopted for the Switch Version of the complete orchestral Soundtrack, the Epic-points brought the game again, especially in the presentation, and who is one of the purists who may enjoy not only the English but the Japanese language edition of the title.

But since not everything is Gold what shines, is it in the Switch Version also has some reductions compared to the Version of the previous year: the First-Person has been deleted-perspective and, at least in the TV-mode is not striking then that the graphics on the Nintendo console fails quite as fancy as the other two systems – even if you can still absolutely see and with other pretty Switch titles go along with you.

At this point, it should be mentioned that a lot of players from the occasional crash, the Switch-Version or the smaller graphic would have noticed Glitches to report – in my Test to me, but nothing.

Character depth and more Retro Feel

Not only audio-visually was the Dragon Quests XI S: Definitive Edition , but upgraded, in the Switch-new edition with the additional Story Content included, the Western players, until now, never had.

For one, you can so in the Retro village Tickington by using special passwords, the you the in the world, scattered inhabitants of the place to inform, in the earlier Dragon Quest-worlds travel, in order to restore them. To the actual Story, these episodes do nothing, just for longtime series Fans, the trips are however, a lot of nice Easter Eggs for a few hours of additional game can provide fun.

On the other, comes the Definitive Edition but also with a new character-the episodes: In the course of the Story you can always back into the role of your companion hatch, and then in short passages more about you and your history, know what the game in an exciting way even more depth.

And then there were …

… some of the Features that make the Gameplay generally easier. You can skip over, for example, between sequences, even in the first play through (nice especially if one has finished the game on PS4 or PC), a portable blacksmith’s furnace, making the crafts now Much more pleasant, there is to Switch a opportunity to get your Ross off the Rufglocken to you, a new quick-command menu simplifies the struggles and collected materials to land directly in your inventory.

In addition, a few new Features for added fun: a photo mode lets you cute pictures, thanks to a new feature you can now customize your Outfit without changing your equipment, are there new marriage options and mounts, and the options for the Draconian-Quests were also removed. All Changes which come individually is of little weight, the game experience combination, however, significantly enhance.

CONCLUSION:

Dragon Quest XI is, and remains, one of the best RPGs of the last few years and the Switch-Version is in many ways even better: in Spite of the not so beautiful HD graphics on Nintendo’s semi-portable console can other presentation changes, such as the new orchestral Soundtrack, and the new alternative 2D-mode, excite, and many comfort adjustments should this Version alone, clearly the Version of choice for all those that make the game not yet played in. If you already have Dragon Quest XIFan is the expect here’s also some Story extensions, all the new character Quests, and the fun Retro adventure in Tickington. Whether this alone is a new purchase to justify, everyone has to decide for himself – who the game has, as yet, has not, but should, in any case, to access and gets the Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition actually, the definitive Edition of the title.
