Book review: mission 64

The book, mission 64 is a visual flashback to the heyday of the Commodore 64. In countless hours and the efforts by authors collected full Screenshots of popular games, and have worn these to a full-time trip together, mainly for Retro-Fans in a magical Era of the computer game is to return the history. I have experienced for you the 240 pages of the Print engine by pressing the one or other of the Flashback back in the Eighties.

In mission 64 , take us, the authors, Peter Otto, Mathias Mertens and Enno Coners on a journey back to Childhood with. Tell us in the prologue how she came in 1982 to her first Commodore 64, and how her life has changed. In spite of this very personal and, above all, nostalgic introduction, the main focus of the book, however, lies mainly in the visual presentation of around seven years of game history. In the send A4-landscape format and in a high-quality Hardcover Packed, will find the countless Screenshots of well-known games from the period of 1982 to 1989. Under these images with short texts, do not represent more than a reminder to be painted, you should then forget the game what it is and how it is played. A reference work or compendium is mission 64 but certainly not, for it contained the descriptions of a lot of to superficial information with only a contingent value. But the don’t want it to be, but rather a tribute to the bread box, and especially to his games.

Are you all there?

On the 240 pages exactly 131 games, C64 games to be treated, wherein the authors themselves acknowledge that it is a very subjective choice, and in advance excuse, if the reader is missing here, maybe some Games. Personally, I find the composition very well, because ad hoc a handful of title would occur to me only that I would also have like to have seen, including, for example, such well-known names such as Rainbow Islands, Speedball, and if the entire Epyx Games series in the book is treated, then I would have taken probably also the similar, but much more fun Caveman Ugh-Lympics to do so. But of course this is all certainly a matter of individual taste, as well as the very personal memories and should not be understood as a criticism, because, of course, nearly all of the C64 are represented by classics such as the Gianna Sisters, Last Ninja, or Maniac Mansion. What surprised me a bit: Why the period of 1982 – 1989, was selected. I admit that in the Nineties, not much interesting for the bread box appeared, but a game series I then, due to this limitation, however, sorely lacking: Turrican. The superior graphics reference, which shows what was on the Commodore 64 at the time, technically, everything possible would have been a great addition.

The selection of the games you can’t complain anyway, but a point I would like to criticize at this point, however, is the selection of the images. I guess that due to the large number of Games, the wanted to put in the book, just don’t have the time to play every single one of them in more detail, in order to create the appropriate Screenshots. The only way I can explain it to me, in fact, that many titles are often just scenes from the start-up phase are shown. What’s especially sad, I think that, among other things, the Shoot ’em Up Katakis, now there, the very creative Design of the Boss enemies really impressive motifs would have made. Nevertheless, the quality of the images is consistently high quality and have been partially nachgepixelt even by Hand. In particular, the double-page illustrations look really great.

CONCLUSION

mission 64 is a tribute to the first digital experience on the Commodore 64, and this mission goal is reached the book with flying colors. Who would like to indulge with his friends in the memories of the time together with the bread box, you should definitely take a look. Through the very extensive selection of partially impressive visual Play is certainly for each of the at least one title here that connects very personal and maybe even emotional moments. And even die-hard C64 Fanboys will not find in the print engine, the one or other Game, which is perhaps the awareness, the deserved it. Due to the great pictures, as well as the high-quality execution provides mission 64 in addition, will certainly enrich the library of every Retro Fans.
