Blockchain and Ledger release common hardware wallet “Lockbox”

The web wallet provider Blockchain has announced a partnership with Ledger, the leading developer of hardware wallets for crypto currencies. The two companies have jointly developed a hardware wallet, the Blockchain Lockbox, which is exclusively compatible with the Blockchain Web Wallet. The Blockchain Lockbox should use the strengths of the two products and set a new standard.

As was announced yesterday, Blockchain has signed a contract with hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger to create a custom hardware wallet that allows Blockchain users to manage their crypto currencies on the new Blockchain Lockbox via the familiar interface. The Lockbox provides Blockchain’s nearly 30 million users with a tailored solution that combines Blockchain’s software with Ledger’s expertise in hardware wallet security.

The device seems to use the Ledger Nano S hardware, but has its own firmware as a standard version, which allows the exclusive features of Lockbox. Lockbox is therefore also not compatible with Ledger Live.

Peter Smith, CEO and cofounder of Blockchain said to the collaboration:

The lockbox is a reflection of what our two companies do best. We have created an elegant software and hardware integration that offers more functionality than was previously the case in our rooms. We are pleased to offer the Lockbox to blockchain users so that they can seamlessly manage their funds online and offline.

Pascal Gauthier, President of Ledger said about the exceptional cooperation:

Since stories about crypto-hacking continue to dominate headlines, it is obvious that security must come first for everyone involved in the crypto area. With the combined forces of blockchain and ledger, users really get the best of both worlds. Our partnership with Blockchain is the first of its kind, but as two companies focus on crypto security, it fits together perfectly.

Pre-orders of the lockbox are possible since yesterday, the delivery should start on November 8th.

Trezor, currently Ledger’s largest competitor, has recently released a wallet feature to allow users to trade crypto currencies via the ShapeShift and Changelly broker services.

The lockbox will also be released in the same week that Sony announced it had developed a groundbreaking contactless crypto currency wallet based on an IC smart card.
