Bitcoin Lightning: an error in the Code was exploited

The developers of Lightning Labs have publicly acknowledged that there was an error in the Code of the Bitcoin Lightning Networks, which can cause users to lose all their BTC.

Previously, Rusty Russell, an Australian programmer for the Bitcoin Lightning Network had already 30. August is the user against security problems in the various Lightning projects, warned that could lead to a loss of money. He had called on the node operator of the network to update their Software. Olaoluwa Osuntokun, the technical Manager of the Lightning Labs, said the developers in a mailing list, several versions of Lightning Nodes require Updates to avoid vulnerabilities.

In a recent Update, the developer confirmed that the previously detected vulnerabilities have been exploited. The development company by the Lightning Network, ACINQ, gave the message on Twitter to the Community. Lightning Labs pointed all users to the fact that the Lightning Network is still in an early stage, in which Bugs can occur:

This is also a good opportunity to remind people that we have boundaries, in order to mitigate the loss of larger amounts of money at this early stage. There will be Bugs. Do not put in more money on the Lightning to lose as you are ready!

This is also a great time to remind folks that we have limits in place to mitigate widespread funds loss at this early stage. There will be bugs.

Don’t put more money on Lightning than you’re willing to lose!

The Lightning Network is a Second-Layer solution, with the user immediately and in a cost-effective money of the Bitcoin Blockchain to send. It is in December 2017 was introduced, as the core team decided that a scaling of the network (without magnification of the blocks) is impossible. Since then, the Lightning Network in the Beta-Test is, and since January of this year, in the Mainnet BTC live. Two years in the Beta seem to be a very long time, but the Exploit does not prove that the solution is still not as robust as it is necessary.

30. August was a message from Lightning, developers, Rusty Russell on a developer mailing list. He warned that more Lightning Node are versions of the vulnerable, and immediately updated to be.

In different Lightning versions of the safety problems were detected, which can lead to a loss of Money. All the Details will be published in 4 weeks (2019-09-27), please update it in advance.

Russell did not reveal the exact Details of the vulnerability, in order to avoid malicious actors to attract. Nevertheless, the CTO of Startup Lightning Labs, Olaoluwa Osuntokun had to admit yesterday that the vulnerability was exploited in the last 24 hours several times, which led to a loss in Bitcoin (BTC).

If not one of the following versions are one of these implementations installed, is urgent an Upgrade is necessary:

  • lnd V0.7.1 – everything that is 0.7 and lower, it is vulnerable.
  • c-lightning V0.7.1 – everything that is 0.7 and lower, it is vulnerable.
  • eclair V0.3.1 – everything that is 0.3 and is less, prone.

There are no Details about how many users are affected or how much money was stolen. Lightning is however still in its infancy, so that it is at the present time, it is hardly recommended to send larger amounts of BTC on it.

Meanwhile, the total capacity of the Lightning network – a measure that indicates the degree of acceptance, according to the Bitcoin Visuals from the High of 1.098 BTC at 10. May on the current number of 833 BTC dropped.
